And my Soul Sings

There is a newborn baby. His little body functions in a way that leaves us breathless.
There is a night-time sky overflowing with stars, sparkling so brilliantly and we gaze amazed.
There is mountain peak that rises beyond our sight into the clouds and we feel humbled in the grandness of such a thing.
There is a perfect sunset that bids us good-night and fills us with peace.
There is a song, consisting of many parts all put together so that a melody and a harmony join in a fellowship of notes.
Life.
Nature.
Music.
We live as people who can stand in awe.
And it's a pretty amazing place to stand.

But here is the thing ~ the most awe-inspiring thing this world has ever experienced is more often missed than seen.
Welcome to Christmas.
A celebration of a special birth, unlike any other.
It wasn't just about a cute, little baby.
It wasn't just about some shepherds and wise men.
It wasn't just about the angels or the star.
It was about love.
It was about sacrifice.
It was about a plan.
It was about hope swaddled in cloths.
Hope wrapped up and offered as a gift.
Hope for a sin-warped world.
Hope for a hurting people.
Hope for love to reign.
And hope births expectation.
It births joy.
It births passion and excitement.
It births the wide-eyed face of the receiver, that awestruck look, that stunned bliss where we can only say, "You gave this to me?"
And then, a humble "Thank you."

So, yes, I stand in awe at Christmas time.
And I smile like a little girl who has waited for that special gift to be pulled out from under the tree, giddy with excitement as she takes it in hand, unwraps it and finds what she's been longing for so deeply. She throws her hands up in the air and dances around the living room, her soul singing.

Merry Christmas, indeed.

"O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder,
consider all the worlds Thy hands have made.
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul, my Saviour, God to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art ..." (How Great Thou Art ~ Carl Boberg)
