Fall Treasures

It is raining today so I am home.

Fall has settled in with its cool winds, frosty blades of grass, and wet soil. Fingers get cold as they dip into the earth to pluck out weeds and dying annuals. These same annuals we planted in the spring, watched as they flourished in the summer heat, and protected from invasive weeds threatening to smother. Their beauty has faded to brown, dead, and limp images of what they once were.

The leaves have a similar story to tell. The amazing costume changes that a tree performs from its green dress to its fall-time cloak are a testament of time passing.

Yet they leave a treasure, a hope for the future.

As I pull out dead stalks of various plants, seed pods become maracas. Some explode and seeds fly into my face with purposeful force. They scatter to the earth below and burrow into the soil which awaits and embraces the promise of the future.

Leaves become the plaything of child and adult alike. Piles of crunchy colour fill backyards taunting anyone to make the plunge and jump. Trees continue to give. Even when they are barren and the leaves are long raked away, the seed lives on. Squirrels scurry around with full mouths, frantically bringing winter food to their homes. The nuts and seeds that they miss promise new life in the ground, new trees.

Nature never ceases to amaze me.
The intricacy of life points to the Creator.
And He cannot be denied.

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." (Psalm 19:1, NIV)

"He replied, "If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!" (Luke 19:40, NLT)
